Thomas Oppold first started working in the chemical industry when he was in high school in 1987. At the time, he worked as a warehouse loader and bulk repackager for Van Waters and Rogers, a chemical distributor that later became known as Univar, a leading global chemical distributor.
Following his 1992 graduation from the University of South Carolina with a bachelor’s degree in management sciences in the field of logistics, Thomas worked for Van Waters and Rogers/Univar for 11 years. He started as a customer service representative/sales trainee in Atlanta, Georgia, before working his way up to a sales position, at various times overseeing territories near Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Charleston, South Carolina. Shortly after opening the Charleston, South Carolina, warehouse for Univar, Thomas was promoted to the position of sales manager for the company’s offices in both Charleston and Spartansburg, South Carolina. For two years, before leaving Univar, Thomas oversaw all of the company’s operations out of Charlotte, North Carolina, as the company’s general manager for that branch.
In 2003, Thomas began a residential home construction company.
The construction company grew out of Thomas’s hobby of rehabbing old homes.
He helped in starting ChemSouth, as a general manager, in late 2008 after realizing there was a need
for a local chemical distributor to service the region.
His wife, Kim, also works for ChemSouth as the company’s administrative manager, among other duties. Kim previously worked alongside her husband at Island Walk as the designer for many of the company’s custom built homes.
